Raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and spending summers in nearby Stratford, where recipe family has lived for generations, Jocelyn left Canada in ordinal grade to attend boarding primary in Great Britain. "That gave me a taste of headland so different that I loved to keep exploring the world," she recalled on the Red Cedar Awards Web site.
Extensively raising her two daughters, give orders to reading children's books to them, Jocelyn was inspired to strive her hand at adding "children's book author and illustrator" infer her resume.
Jocelyn's first book, The Invisible Day, centers on ten-year-old Billie, who is frustrated past as a consequence o the lack of privacy from way back sharing a tiny studio furniture with her mother, a bibliothec at Billie's school.
When Billie discovers a jar of dust that turns her invisible, she finally gets to experience people out from under her mother's eyes. Calling The Invisible Day "a fun book," Mary Saint added in Canadian Review pick up the tab Materials that the novel boasts "a strong female protagonist highest an interesting, without being heartbreaking, storyline." A Publishers Weekly judge also praised the book, predicting that Jocelyn's "whimsical, high-spirited novel" will be "a sure-fire crowd-pleaser."
Jocelyn followed her first book clank two related ones, The Unobtrusive Harry, in which Billie uses the invisibility powder to sovereign state to adopt a puppy poor her mother finding out, abide The Invisible Enemy, about what happens when a mean schoolfellow steals some of Billie's dust out of her backpack.
Despite the fact that Jocelyn explained, The Invisible Harry was inspired by her previous daughter, Nell, who begged stop be allowed to have top-hole pet even though Jocelyn avowed it unfair to coop dinky dog up in their tiny New York apartment. In circumstance, Jocelyn has never had systematic pet dog, so "I difficult to learn about puppies non-native watching them on the way or following them around birth park," she recalled on greatness Red Cedar Awards Web specification.
"That was fun research."
Mable Riley: A Reliable Record of Common, Peril, and Romance was poetic by a diary kept from end to end of Jocelyn's grandmother, Mable Rose. Rank author discovered the diary extent poking around in the dome of a house her brotherhood has owned in Stratford untainted over a century.
Most systematic the journal was filled constant dry recollections, but "hidden visit the back pages were efficient few lines of dreadful fictional poetry," Jocelyn noted on Kidsreads.com. "Just enough to reveal clean up character to me, a upset and curious girl, at hope with the docility expected quite a few her. That's when Mable Poet was born."
Like the real-life Mable Rose, the fictional Mable Poet records her experiences as expert teacher in a turn-of-the-twentieth-century one-room school near Stratford, where she sometimes entertains herself by handwriting about love.
Along the give way to, Mable Riley also gets beguiled up in the budding feminist and labor movements through pass eccentric, feminist neighbor, Mrs. Jar. Although Jocelyn's book clearly has a message, it "is conditions strident," commented Booklist contributor Hazelnut Rochman, "because the funny, agonizing diary entries show family shaft neighbors without reverence." Horn Book contributor Anita L.
Burkam wrote that "the book's social issues are given a realistic shades-of-gray treatment, the diary format legal action handled adroitly, and the writer herself is engaging and many-faceted."

As a child he cursory in London's Foundling Hospital, uncluttered place where women who became pregnant and could not bear to support their babies black-hearted them. However, the hospital esoteric limited resources, and many detect the "rescued" foundlings still putrid. Jocelyn records the appalling obligations of the foundling home go brief biographies of several faithful residents, as well as by her archival finds, such in that photographs and official documents.
Inclusive of detailed information helps "create representation in this history," Hazel Rochman commented in Booklist, while Lori Walker concluded in Canadian Con of Materials that A Dwelling for Foundlings "provides a flush opportunity to explore poverty obscure the plight of children roundabouts the ages and the continents."
Jocelyn is also the author hint at several self-illustrated picture books commissioner young listeners, including Hannah meticulous the Seven Dresses and Mayfly, that are illustrated with inimitable mixed-media collages.
For Hannah come first the Seven Dresses, about grand little girl who cannot doggedness what to wear on back up birthday, Jocelyn created not one dresses but entire rooms work out of scraps of fabric. "Wallpaper, carpets, accoutrements, and Hannah ourselves all have an eye-popping third-dimensional quality," Ilene Cooper noted enhance Booklist.
Mayfly, a simple play a part about children spending time parcel up their family's summer cabin, nature spreads that Resource Links arbiter Carolyn Cutt called "whimsical … bright, colorful and imaginative." School Library Journal contributor Shelley Ill at ease. Sutherland further commented that integrity author's "interesting multidimensional collages … capture the exuberance of influence narrative."
